City Council Rejects Study Group for Nonpartisan Elections
Tonight, I was taken aback when Council voted down Ordinance 17-56, which would have created a study group to explore the impact of adopting nonpartisan election in Newark. It went down - depressingly - on a purely partisan vote (5-6) with all the Democrats voting for it and all the Republicans voting against it. Tonight city council will meet and decide the fate of Ordinance 17-56, which will create a Charter Review Study Group pertinent to researching the issue of nonpartisan elections. The election didn’t go the way I wanted, but boy did we come close. Our path is nowhere near its end, though. Voting is only part of the struggle, because democracy is about constant and persistent participation. I urge you to remain engaged; continue to strive - together – for the society we all deserve. It’s hard to believe, but the 2017 Election is almost here. On the eve thereof, City Council will meet, and you can expect another demonstration by a number of citizens of Newark feeling betrayed by what happened with our Gazebo. I fully expect that that Mayor will be there this time, and I hope he plans on responding to their concerns and requests for answers. Prior to the Council meeting at 7pm, these citizens plan on convening in the area of the Square where the Gazebo use
